The New York City Department of Health (DSNY) plans to purchase seven Mack Trucks LR Electric garbage models, which will be operated in every borough of the city.

DSNY received its first all-electric garbage truck Mack LR Electric demonstration model in September 2020, when it began rigorous actual testing in Brooklyn. Since then, DSNY has been evaluating payload capacity, regenerative braking, overall vehicle performance in its demanding operations, operating range, and charging requirements.

As the world's largest municipal sanitation department, DSNY collects approximately 12,000 tons of garbage and recyclables every day and owns more than 6,000 vehicles, most of which are Mack trucks.

The seven BEVs will be located in seven areas of New York City-Bronx, Brooklyn North, Brooklyn South, Manhattan, East Queens, West Queens and Staten Island. DSNY will use a DC fast charger to charge each LR Electric car.

DSNY testing of the Mack LR Electric model is still in progress. The DSNY Mack LR electric demonstrator is equipped with dual 167 kW electric motors, providing a combined output of 448 continuous horsepower and 4,051 pound-feet. Available torque from zero RPM. The vehicle is equipped with a two-speed Mack Powershift transmission and Mack's proprietary S462R 46,000-pound rear axle.

Four NMC (nickel manganese cobalt oxide) lithium-ion batteries are charged through a 150kW, SAE J1772 compliant charging system, and provide vehicle propulsion and power for all on-board accessories through 12V, 24V and 600V circuits. The three-mode regenerative braking system solves the increasing load of garbage trucks throughout the day and helps recover energy from the hundreds of stops the vehicle makes every day.

Mack LR Electric is equipped with a bronze Bulldog hood decoration, which symbolizes an all-electric transmission system. It can be equipped with equipment bodies from multiple manufacturers, so that the truck can be tailored to the unique needs of each customer. Customers will be able to choose from the same driver/passenger side driving configuration, seat selection and door options offered by diesel-powered LR models.

In recent years, we have seen the trend of replacing separation screens with ballistic separators. We like ballistic separators as much as the next person, but believe they have their place. How do you know where that place is?
